Three things to confirm

Your fasting instructions
Know when to stop eating and drinking.
Your medication plan
Confirm what to take or pause.
Your ride home
Arrange an adult to accompany you.

Your personal instructions come first.

Preparation depends on your procedure, anesthesia plan, and health history. Follow the directions given by your surgeon and anesthesia team. If anything is unclear, contact the office before your appointment.

Food & drink

Your care team will tell you when to stop eating and drinking before your procedure. Follow those times carefully.

  • Confirm your instructions for solid foods and liquids in advance.
  • Ask whether any morning medication may be taken with water.
  • If you eat or drink outside your instructions, tell the office before your procedure.

Medications & health history

Share a complete list of your medications, vitamins, and supplements with your care team, along with allergies and any previous anesthesia concerns.

  • Confirm which medications to take, pause, or adjust before your procedure.
  • Ask for a specific plan if you take diabetes medications, weight-loss medications, or blood thinners.
  • Do not change prescribed medications without direction from your treating clinician.

Your ride & recovery

If you are receiving sedation or general anesthesia, arrange for a responsible adult to take you home. You should not drive yourself afterward.

  • Confirm whether your accompanying adult needs to remain at the office.
  • Ask how long someone should stay with you at home.
  • Follow your discharge instructions for driving, work, activity, and other restrictions.

Getting ready to arrive

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and leave jewelry and valuables at home. Confirm your arrival time and office location before leaving.

  • Bring your photo ID, insurance information, and current medication list.
  • Bring any documents or items specifically requested by our team.
  • Have your accompanying adult’s contact information available.

When to contact the office

Let us know before your appointment if your health or preparation has changed.

  • You have a new illness, fever, cough, or other symptoms.
  • Your medications or medical history have changed.
  • You cannot follow your fasting instructions or arrange the required transportation.
  • You are unsure which instructions apply to your appointment.
